It started as an art project that I did with the children at the elementary school where I worked. Automatic drawing the idea behind it was to free the children from stereotypes about art. Many times they want their paintings to be very pretty, without thinking that “ugly” things can also make a painting beautiful. I implemented this for my own work as well. I began to sit and observe how often I think negatively about cisgender men, thinking that patriarchy is enforced by the male sex and, in turn, oppresses the female sex.
But I was not standing still on the fact that toxic masculinity does not only affect women in general, but also affects men. Toxic masculinity, instead of strengthening men, actually makes them weaker and more vulnerable.
